CAHSPR Connects

Hi there! We’re the SWG – the Student Working Group

By September 16, 2024No Comments

We’re the official, student-run branch of CAHSPR and we work to promote student/trainee priorities and presence within the Health Services and Policy Research Community. We organize events throughout the academic year like our “What to do with my degree?” webinar series as well as workshops (abstracts, CVs, and beyond). We also have a monthly newsletter to help students connect with job and funding opportunities, publishing opportunities, and each other. We are also incredibly active at the CAHSPR Conference – this year we hosted a student/trainee Networking Marathon and a Dragon’s Den-style competition (where we awarded $1000 in research funding).

We’re looking for new members to join our executive team. It’s a great opportunity to meet and work with awesome, driven students/trainees who want to make a difference in HSPR. You’ll build your skills while helping promote student and trainee priorities in Canada’s largest HSPR organization. Volunteering on the SWG Executive is a great way to build your network, find a conference buddy, or get a lead on a potential job or scholarship – and it’s a great way to help other students and trainees find these same opportunities.

You’ll be joining a small but dedicated team of graduate students who cannot wait to meet you and hear your ideas. Co-chair Komal Aryal (a doctoral candidate in health research methodology at McMaster University) brings a wealth of leadership experience to the team. Communications co-leads Roma Dhamanaskar (a PhD candidate in the Health Policy program at McMaster University) and Mary Bunka (an MSc student in population and public health at UBC) bring their passion for engaging with fellow lifelong learners and helping students and trainees make the most of those sometimes hard-to-find opportunities.

No matter what you’re passionate about or looking to try, we’ve got a position for you. We’re recruiting for the following executive positions:

  • Co-chair
  • Communications co-lead
  • Events co-lead
  • Finance lead
  • Research co-lead
  • Project manager
  • EDIA lead

If any of this resonates with you and you would like to get involved, we would love to meet you. Email us at swg@cahspr.ca or head straight to our executive application form (it’s quick, we promise!) at https://forms.gle/Ae5h91nQbn33ES858

Looking forward to meeting you,

Mary Bunka
on behalf of the CAHSPR Student Working Group

PS: While we’ve got your attention, we’d like to extend our special thanks to outgoing co-chair Rose Gagnon for her amazing commitment and collaborative spirit. Rose has been instrumental in the SWG’s success at the most recent CAHSPR Conference and at the events leading up to it. Rose also represented our committee on the CAHSPR executive board, and we cannot thank her enough for her hard work and dedication to us and to trainees and students everywhere. Thanks also to outgoing events lead Sandy Rao, who planned and hosted online webinars, discussion sessions, and who put together the amazing meet-and-greet event at the CAHSPR Conference, where we had a full house in attendance to kick off our Networking Marathon. Sandy’s creativity and thoughtfulness truly embody the spirit of the SWG. Best of luck to both of you as you continue to make the world a better place!
