Background & Purpose

Formed in 2008, the Student Working Group (SWG) is a pan-Canadian, student-run, voluntary group that aims to enhance graduate student and postdoctoral fellow involvement in the annual CAHSPR conference and in the health services and policy research (HSPR) community.

The SWG works to achieve its mission by:

  • Promoting trainee presence and involvement at CAHSPR events, and representing trainees at the CAHSPR board;
  • Encouraging and facilitating networking opportunities between trainees and other members of the HSPR community (e.g., researchers, administrators, policymakers, funding organizations, etc.);
  • Organizing and sharing educational sessions that help trainees develop the skills and competencies needed to thrive as members of the HSPR community;
  • Supporting trainee-led research and policy project through direct funding and publishing opportunities;
  • Sharing news and and opportunities of interest to trainees, including but not limited to information on key issues in HSPR, HSPR-related conferences, awards and a special focus on career-related opportunities

In 2023-24, SWG-led initiatives have included a “What To Do With My Degree” dialogue series with people in various positions in industry and academia, an “Abstract Essentials” workshop to support students interested in submitting abstracts to the CAHSPR conference, and a Dragon’s Den Pitch competition with a $1000 grand prize. In the past, we’ve hosted grant writing workshops, networking and mentorship events, student social nights, and much more!
