Background & Purpose

The Mental Health and Substance Use (MHSU) Theme Group’s overall aim is to convene, support and strengthen Canada’s mental health and substance use health services and policy research community. In line with this aim, we are building a national network of researchers, trainees, practitioners, decision-makers, policymakers, community partners, people with lived and living experience, and others who are passionate about MHSU health services and policy research.

We envision that the MHSU theme group will include a broad focus on:

  • All age groups and populations
  • The full spectrum of mental health and substance use health, from wellness to illness and disorders
  • The full continuum of care and services for mental health and substance use problems, including health promotion, prevention, and treatment and supports promoting recovery and well-being
  • Biopsychosocial-spiritual risk and protective factors related to MHSU
  • Policies and other system-level initiatives relevant to mental health and substance use health

We are committed to co-creating the structure, purpose, and goals of this working group with interested members.
