A strategic and creative thinker with a track record of success and international recognition as a results-oriented research leader will welcome this unique opportunity to lead systems transformation at CAMH while overseeing the Institute for Mental Health Policy Research (IMHPR).


IMHPR conducts mental health policy, epidemiological, and community intervention research encompassing the broadly defined domain of mental health and substance use. Reporting to the Vice President, Research, you will oversee the Institute’s annual budget of $10.8M (with $4.8M in core funding), research programs, and staff complement of 130 individuals, while ensuring that research is carried out in an ethical manner and in compliance with regulations.

More specifically, as Senior Director, Research, you will ensure appropriate resourcing, budgetary and regulatory compliance, and ethical activity related to mental health policy and epidemiology research programs in the areas of Population Health and Community Transformation, Community Addiction and Mental Health Research Evaluation, and Health Outcomes and Performance Evaluation, as well as Ontario as a Community Laboratory (known as the O-LAB). This is a sizable mandate involving the oversight of three additional IMHPR research units: 1) Ontario Tobacco and Research Unit (OTRU); 2) Office of Transformative Global Health; and 3) WHO/PAHO Collaborating Centre.

An engaging, confident and persuasive communicator, you will also represent IMHPR externally, cultivating and enhancing relationships with respect to research partnerships, commercial opportunities, funding, recruitment, and the healthcare sector.



The Senior Director of Research we seek will hold an MD or PhD degree in medicine, medical science, psychology, epidemiology or a related professional field, complemented by no fewer than 10 years of progressive experience with a track record of success and international recognition in mental health policy, epidemiological, or community intervention research. As this accomplished professional, you will also bring the following strengths:

  • You are a strategic thinker with the ability to lead national and international collaborations. 
  • You have a proven history of administrative and budgetary leadership related to research programs.
  • You are adept at obtaining funding for research programs.
  • You have established a reputation for building and leading productive interdisciplinary scientific units.
  • You are experienced in working with external medical, scientific and/or research bodies.
  • You can problem-solve skilfully and build partnerships in research programs.
  • You thrive in a collaborative environment where professionals from diverse backgrounds work effectively side by side.
  • You are committed to creating and fostering a diverse, equitable, and inclusive work environment made up of a team of individuals with a diverse range of identities and backgrounds, including (but not limited to) Indigenous people, members of other racialized groups, women, and LGBTQ2S individuals.
  • You will be familiar with the ethics and protocols involved in conducting research with underserved and marginalized communities. Experience with First Nations, Inuit and/or Métis populations will be considered an asset.
