Status: Full time contract – 1 year to start, with option for extension/renewal

The Data Discovery team at the Institute for Better Health is embarking on an exciting new initiative and is seeking a Project Manager to support the design, build and implementation of a Big Data platform that will enable, inform and enrich research and business analytics at Trillium Health Partners. The vision for the data platform is to bring the ‘outside view in’ by bringing together disparate types and sources of data from within THP and our community partners. We will apply advanced analytics and artificial intelligence to uncover new insights to better investigate, innovate and plan but ultimately to improve the lives and health of the community.

  • Manage the design, build and implementation of a Big Data and advanced analytics platform (including addressing all change management, regulatory and policy considerations)
  • Work with internal and external subject matter experts to develop a target state architecture to enable advanced analytics and Big Data methods
  • Select and integrate specific Big Data tools and frameworks required to provide processing and integration capabilities
  • Work with vendor, internal and external stakeholders to implement Big Data infrastructure, technologies and end to end data flow processes including ETL processes to populate data platform
  • Identify and evaluate data sources and automate collection processes where possible
  • Build specific analytics solutions using a variety of Big Data technologies and analytics tools; including data mining, predictive modeling and machine learning algorithms
  • Create robust documentation of solutions and underlying design decisions and operating procedures
  • Support analytics projects and manage all aspects of analytic work (eg. data ingestion, validation, mining, engineering work streams, modeling and visualization)
  • Support development of data sharing agreement templates by working closely with privacy and legal services
  • Track, communicate, and manage project risks and budget
  • Stakeholder engagement and management
  • Propose solutions and strategies to business challenges
  • Collaborate with IT, software developers and external consultants
  • Contribute to the preparation of scientific and community-oriented presentations and reports


  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering or relevant field; Master’s or other graduate degree in a quantitative field is an asset
  • 3-7 years of professional experience in Big Data development, data engineering, data architecture or data management
  • Experience in designing and implementing scalable, distributed systems leveraging cloud computing technologies like Microsoft Azure
  • Demonstrated hands on experience with data platform implementations particularly data ingestion, staging, and integration
  • Demonstrated experience with project management. Project Management Professional (PMP) designation an asset
  • Demonstrated hands on experience with Big Data technologies (e.g. Spark, Pig, Hive, HBase, etc)
  • Experience working with commercial distributions of HDFS (e.g. Hortonworks, Cloudera, MapR) an asset
  • Expert knowledge regarding different non-relational database (NoSQL, RDBMS, Cassandra, HBase) and relational data warehouse is ideal
  • Knowledge of R, SQL and Python; familiarity with Scala, Java or C++ is an asset
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills, including presentation skills (eg. MS PowerPoint)
  • Strong problem solving and troubleshooting skills with the ability to exercise mature judgment
  • Good understanding of hospital operations and the healthcare system encouraged
  • Strong analytical mind and business acumen
  • Works well as part of a team
