The Ottawa Hospital in collaboration with the School of Epidemiology, Public Health and Preventive Medicine and Department of Medicine at the University of Ottawa, and Department of Anesthesiology, Pharmacology and Therapeutics at the University of British Columbia are undertaking a major strategic development in the area of patient safety and quality of care.  As a result of this initiative, we are seeking for a post-doctoral fellow to work as part of a dynamic multi-disciplinary team, consisting of clinicians, epidemiologists, statisticians and health economists who work closely with the Performance Measurement Department at The Ottawa Hospital to support the hospital’s strategy to be a top 10% performer for quality and patient safety in North America. The successful candidate will also work with researchers and analysts at the Institute for Clinical and Evaluative Sciences (ICES) uOttawa. The rich supply of faculty members and staff with various expertise will facilitate a successful training experience for the successful candidate.

The post-doctoral fellow will participate in projects and tasks that will enable him/her to develop competency in understanding the complexity of health care delivery. The successful candidate will be exposed to a wide array of tools, strategies, and methodologies in the fields of safety and quality improvement, drug safety, and pharmacoeconomics. The successful candidate will be involved in and have the opportunity to publish from several ongoing pharmacoepidemiologic and health services research projects. The post-doctoral fellow will work closely and cooperatively with Drs. Alan Foster, Malcolm Maclure, and Kednapa Thavorn.

Expected responsibilities:

  • Design and undertake health system research projects, such as the validation of diagnostic codes for identifying post-surgical complications, and an evaluation of new approaches for adverse event detection
  • Developing statistical models for adverse event prediction
  • Coordinating dataset creation and data management
  • Conducting a health economic evaluation of quality improvement interventions/initiatives
  • Preparing and communicating findings in posted reports and peer-reviewed publications, rounds, and scientific conferences, as required
  • Assist with grant writing and submissions
  • Lead/participate in manuscript writing and submissions

Basic Requirements (Education/Experience):

  • PhD in health services research, health economics, or epidemiology
  • Experience working in health system and/or health services research
  • Experience working with large administrative/financial databases
  • Knowledge in the areas of biostatistics, clinical research methods, clinical epidemiology, and health economics
  • Experience writing peer-reviewed publications
  • Strong quantitative analysis skills
  • Strong communication skills (oral/written)
  • Ability to manage multiple projects at one time
  • Strong interpersonal skills

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively and effectively as both part of a team and independently

Benefits and Opportunities:

Doctoral Fellow: Minimum Stipend $40,000.00 (annual)
