This position is a joint venture between the University of Toronto, Institute of Health Policy, Management and Evaluation (IHPME; Dalla Lana School of Public Health) and the Centre for Addiction and Mental Health (CAMH). Reporting to the Director Health Systems Research, the Health Economist (Independent Scientist) will take a lead role in health economics research at CAMH.
As the largest mental health care provider in Canada, CAMH is frequently implementing innovations and novel service delivery interventions (e.g., Integrated Care Pathways). The Health Economist will play a critical role in the evaluation, including cost-effectiveness analyses, of these innovations and interventions with the goal of strengthening CAMH’s position and the Institute of Health Policy, Management and Evaluation’s role as health performance measurement experts in the development and dissemination of cost-effective mental health service delivery with the goal of maximizing quality and efficiency. Specifically, this position will support the strategic plan of CAMH to increase novel service delivery interventions, which have been economically evaluated.
CAMH and IHPME are seeking a health economist to take on the above described challenge to develop new economic evaluation models for interventions in the area of mental and addictive disorders. The job requires an excellent understanding of principles of economic evaluation, health services research and advanced econometrics. The results of this work will be important to inform mental health and addiction policy and resource planning, and improve delivery of care for patients with mental and addictive disorders in Ontario. In this position, you will prepare manuscripts for publications in peer reviewed journals and will play a lead role as the principal investigator in the submission of grant proposals to external funding agencies. The successful candidate will hold an appointment at IHPME (this will involve teaching and graduate student supervision responsibilities). As part of a larger scientific team, the Health Economist will be expected to play a key facilitation role in building a productive scientific team mentoring, coaching and training research staff, post doctoral fellows and research trainees. The Scientist will be expected to demonstrate a commitment to conducting and fostering research and enthusiasm about participating in multidisciplinary research and training activities. This joint position is a joint venture between IHPME and CAMH will be located primarily at 33 Russell Street.
The successful candidate will possess a Ph.D. in Health Economics or related field with an excellent understanding of principles of economic evaluation, health service research and advanced econometrics. You will have demonstrated excellence in advanced econometrics and modeling. You will have experience in working with large datasets and administrative health care data in addition to experience and/or success in applying for funding, and development of quality applications to peer reviewed granting agencies, including successful experience in the acquisition of contracts or grants. This position also requires an excellent (proven) track record and aptitude in writing for peer-reviewed publication, and a thorough understanding of health economic methods with skills in computer-based economic and statistical modeling. The successful candidate will have demonstrated ability and experience in all stages of research, including expertise in research design and management of research projects, and quantitative methods, including the ability to conduct high level statistical analyses, such as multivariate approaches and structural equation modelling. You possess excellent computer skills. The successful candidate will have demonstrated ability in project management and organizational skills, including the design and management of research projects and report writing. The candidate should be self-directed and have experience working in a highly team-focused environment with multi-disciplinary team members from diverse backgrounds. The ability to collaborate effectively with colleagues, decision makers and the scientific community is required. Other requirements include: sound judgment, negotiation skills, strategic planning skills, and advanced facilitation skills; problem solving, networking and partnership building skills; commitment to high quality work and attention to detail; and excellent communication skills (written, oral and presentation). Bilingualism (French/English) and/or proficiency in a second language would be an asset.
Please note: This full-time five year (renewable) position is NOT part of any bargaining unit.
