The Mental Health Commission of Canada (MHCC) is a non-profit organization created to focus national attention on mental health issues and to work to improve the health and social outcomes of people living with mental health problems and illnesses.


The Commission has a mandate to develop a Mental Health Strategy for Canada; to implement a ten-year Anti-Stigma/Anti-Discrimination program; to develop a Knowledge Exchange Centre for the mental health field and to address homelessness in the context of mental health problems.  The Mental Health Commission’s head office is located in Calgary, Alberta, with a second office in Ottawa, Ontario.


The MHCC has established five priority areas for the coming two years: (a) activating the Mental Health Strategy for Canada; (b) completing the MHCC’s ten-year anti-stigma/anti-discrimination effort; (c) addressing housing and homelessness; (d) improving workplace mental health; and (e) acting to prevent suicide.  Prevention and Promotion include workplace mental health, suicide prevention as well as other pieces of work relating to ementalhealth, peer support, and the development of core competencies for physicians and surgeons. 



The MHCC is seeking a highly motivated individual to join the suicide prevention team within the Prevention and Promotion department. The focus of this position is on managing projects, including promotion of gatekeeper training; working with partners and community towards established goals; and driving the uptake, implementation and reach of the Commission’s work relating to suicide prevention.



  • Manages key suicide prevention projects for the Commission, including gatekeeping initiatives;
  • Tracks expenditures, manages contracts and assists with preparation of annual budgets as assigned by Director;
  • Creates and implements project work plans and revises as appropriate to meet changing needs and requirements;
  • Engages other departments of the Commission to support uptake and extend reach of the work relating to suicide prevention;
  • Works with key partners, subject-matter experts, practitioners and community representatives to identify opportunities to advance Commission efforts with regard to suicide prevention;
  • Develops knowledge exchange products, tools or activities to inform policy and program development;
  • Identifies and brings together key partners, subject-matter experts, practitioners and community representatives to share evidence, knowledge and best practices in the area of suicide prevention;
  • Engages in ongoing strategic policy analysis relating to suicide prevention in Canada;
  • Represents the Commission on suicide prevention with various groups and stakeholders;
  • Prepares reports and other written material for both internal and external audience; and
  • Provides research functions such as review, analysis, and synthesis of relevant literature.



  • Strong organizational, project management and interpersonal skills;
  • Strong leadership skills including facilitation, support and mentoring;
  • Demonstrated experience with group facilitation and team work/development, and a history of effective working relationships at multiple levels;
  • Experience working with a variety of stakeholders to develop relationships and achieve shared goals;
  • Excellent planning and time management skills, with ability to multi‐task, produce and coordinate projects with tight deadlines;
  • Strong strategic policy analysis skills;
  • Strength in reviewing and summarizing key reports and literature with an eye to identifying opportunities to advance policy and practice;
  • Experience in writing and editing logical and detailed reports;
  • Experience in implementing knowledge exchange strategies;
  • Highly motivated by team work;
  • Demonstrated ability to learn new information quickly and ability and aptitude to stay current by upgrading skills;
  • Personal integrity, sound judgment and an honest and ethical approach;
  • Ability to communicate effectively, both verbally and written; and
  • The ability to learn quickly and work independently.



  • The Project Manager should hold a Bachelor’s Degree in policy or a related field with experience (health preferred) in marketing, communications, stakeholder/government and/or experience.
  • Master’s degree in public health or a related field is preferable;
  • Bilingual preferred;
  • A minimum of two years of progressively responsible project management and research experience in a related field; and
  • Project Management Professional (PMP) certification preferable.



  • Extended periods of time spent in meeting type settings (5 plus hours)
  • Extended visual requirements (5 plus hours) due to computer related work
  • High requirement for multi-tasking and effectively dividing attention to numerous duties and responsibilities
  • High degree of concentration required (meetings, presentation, etc.)
  • High level of stamina due to travel, work time requirements
  • High analytical and interpretive requirements



  • Continuously deadline driven requirements

  • Moderate to high level exposure to stress resulting from complex interactions, stakeholder relations, and output requirements.
  • Moderate to high level exposure to extended travel requirements (up to 40% and greater at times) and extension of work day beyond 7.5 hours
  • High level requirement to maintain concentration for extended periods of time in order to maximize stakeholder engagement, perform situational strategic analysis and interpretation of data and minimize errors.
  • Capacity to effectively organize and prioritize own work.
  • High degree of emotional intelligence required in order to develop and maintain good relationships, communicate clearly, influence and inspire others, work well in a team, and manage conflict.
  • Responsive to possible rapid changes in priorities;
  • Adaptable to change (organizational and environmental)
  • Performance goals and objectives are established yearly and regularly reviewed.
