Objective

Support a junior researcher to acquire a one-year postdoctoral research experience within a systematic review project on end-of-life policies

Fellowship description

The main research objective of this systematic review is to assess the impact of public polices on medical end-of-life practices, based on published empirical studies. The post-doctoral fellow will be responsible for the meta-analysis of observational quantitative studies on medical end-of-life practices conducted in different countries.

The post-doctoral fellow will be based at the Charles-Lemoyne research center (South Shore of Montreal, directly accessible from the Longueuil metro station), under the direction of professor Antoine Boivin (http://www.usherbrooke.ca/medecine/recherche/profils-de-chercheurs/boivin-antoine/), designated principal investigator on the project. The fellow will be integrated in an international interdisciplinary research team (Canada, United Kingdom, Netherlands), including experts in health services and policy research, medicine, law, ethics, psychology, and public health. This research project is funded by the Canadian Institutes of Health Research. This project is part of a larger research program on public involvement in improving health services and policies.

The post-doctoral fellow will be responsible for :

  1. The meta-analysis of observational studies (50% of the task);
  2. The systematic review coordination (20%);
  3. Writing of scientific articles (20%);
  4. Contribute to knowledge exchange activities with policymakers and citizens (10%). 

Conditions

  • Hold a doctoral degree (PhD) in health services and policy research, public health, epidemiology, community health, or human and social sciences, with a focus on quantitative or mixed method research.
  • Be authorized to work in Canada
  • Submit an application to the 2013-2014 post-doctoral fellowship competition of the Charles-Lemoyne Research Center.

Selection criteria

  • Expertise in systematic review and meta-analysis of observational studies
  • Familiar with mixed-method research
  • Excellent knowledge of written and spoken English
  • Capacity to work in an interdisciplinary environment
  • Knowledge of SPSS or SAS, EndNote, Excel and Filemaker are assets 
  • Experience in scientific writting
  • Autonomy, intellectual rigour, and initiative
  • Capacity to prioritize work and to complete tasks within agreed timelines
