Position description

The Departments of Pediatrics and of Epidemiology, Biostatistics, and Occupational Health, Faculty of Medicine, McGill University, invites applications for a tenure track position as an Assistant Professor of Pediatric Epidemiology with a joint appointment in both Departments.

McGill University is one of Canada’s leading universities, and the Department of Pediatrics is the hub for academic activities concerning fetal, newborn, infant, child, and youth health in the Faculty of Medicine. This includes clinical care covering a complete range of secondary and sub-specialty tertiary clinical services that addresses the health needs of vulnerable children and medically complex pediatric diseases. These clinical services are delivered in community settings, as well as in the out-patient clinics, in-patient wards and intensive care units (neonatal & pediatric) of the Montreal Children's Hospital and our partners in the McGill network of health service delivery. The Department of Pediatrics houses a large research program, including epidemiologic, clinical, and basic research. The Department of Epidemiology, Biostatistics, and Occupational Health is one of the top academic units for teaching and research in epidemiology and offers a vibrant environment. Our professors conduct a wide range of research and are recognized as international leaders and experts in their respective fields. 

McGill University is situated in the heart of downtown Montreal, one of the most cosmopolitan and diverse cities in North America, and the university campus is located at the edge of splendid Mount Royal. The Department of Pediatrics is situated in recently built (2015) clinical and research facilities on the Glen Health Care Campus of the McGill University Health Centre.

Job Duties

Faculty members are expected to conduct a strong independent research program in child health and to supervise a diverse group of graduate trainees. The successful candidate will lead his/her own research program relevant to both Pediatrics and Epidemiology, and collaborate with researchers in both departments. The successful candidate will also be required to teach graduate students in the Master’s and PhD programs in Epidemiology, and to participate in research training of clinical residents and fellows in Pediatrics. In addition, the candidate will be required to be involved in academic and administrative committees.

Qualifications and Education requirements

Candidates must have a doctorate in epidemiology or a closely related field and relevant post-doctoral and research experience in pediatric and/or perinatal epidemiology. Necessary qualifications for the position include evidence of research productivity (peer-reviewed publications) and a strong commitment to excellence in teaching. The successful candidate will have potential and proven ability to develop an internationally recognized research program, a demonstrated ability to obtain grants for his/her own research and to contribute to the building of successful research projects. Candidates must also demonstrate team spirit in developing their own research.

Although we will consider all strong applicants, we are particularly interested in candidates with expertise in the areas of big data, pragmatic clinical trials, technology-enabled health systems or clinical care innovations.
