The Department of Family Medicine (http://www.ucalgary.ca/familymedicine) in the Cumming School of Medicine at the University of Calgary, in partnership with the O’Brien Institute for Public Health (OIPH: https://obrieniph.ucalgary.ca) invites applications for a Contingent Term appointment at the Assistant Professor level position, to develop an independent research program in clinical, population health or health service research related to Family Medicine and Primary Care. Joint appointment may be provided in the Department of Community Health Sciences. (http://www.ucalgary.ca/communityhealthsciences/ ).
Qualifications include a PhD or equivalent in the domain of Health Services Research. The applicant must have demonstrated success at obtaining national level grants as a Principal Investigator and a high-level scientific publication track record. Alignment of research interests with the priorities of the University of Calgary and the 2015-2020 Cumming School of Medicine (CSM) strategic plan (http://cumming.ucalgary.ca/deans-office/strategic-plan) is required. In particular, research interests should align with the CSM’s Precision Medicine priority and the OIPH’s Translational Precision Medicine plan, aimed at delivering precision discoveries to patients and populations.
The position provides 70% protected time for research and will also include teaching at undergraduate and graduate levels (25%). This is an excellent opportunity to develop an independent externally-funded research program, within an outstanding collaborative environment. Startup packages are available through the Department of Family Medicine and the OIPH.
We are seeking a researcher with expertise in the development of innovative approaches to transitions in levels of care and decreasing upstream pressure on acute care resources, as well as finding new ways of facilitating discharge back to the community. There is an evolving need for a Transition Medicine domain of research. The research agenda may address Knowledge Translation (KT) within Primary Care as important questions remain to be answered. We are also looking into the integration of Precision Medicine in the context of Family Medicine. There is enormous potential in understanding the concept within the Patient-Focused Care paradigm. We are also now at the initial stages of linking primary care data and Big Data. This emerging issue relates to resource planning at local and regional levels, and aligns with the Primary Care Network development in Alberta and their capacity to fulfil future mandates. This work will integrate with the O’Brien Institute’s “Enhanced Health Systems Performance” theme.
