President’s Message
 

CAHSPR’s annual conference (May 28-30 in Vancouver) is this week… and it promises to be a blockbuster. Keynote speakers include David Blumenthal of the US Commonwealth Fund; Brian Hutchison, this year’s Emmet Hall laureate; a panel of experts from the Pan-Canadian Health Reform Analysis Network (PHRAN); and Chris Ham of the UK’s King’s Fund. In addition to featuring issues of concern to CAHSPR’s Theme Groups, our nine sub-plenary sessions will focus on key components of the “Triple Aim” such as how to engage patients, families and providers in pursuit of the triple aim, how to measure performance and progress, and how to implement improvements across “whole systems”. Our six concurrent scientific sessions will cover the issues that are occupying health services and policy researchers across the country… and keeping policy- and decision-makers awake at night.
 
In addition to the sessions, I’d like to encourage those who will be at the conference to attend CAHSPR’s Annual General Meeting, to be held on Wednesday May 29th from 7:30am to 9am. You’ll get a chance to meet the CAHSPR Executive, learn about the work undertaken and planned by each of our Theme Groups, and hear about our Website redevelopment plans. We’ll have a few items that require a vote, including a proposed change in the term of the President – back to a two year term as existed prior to 2010. Breakfast will be available so please plan to join us.

2013 Annual CAHSPR Conference

Making Good on the Triple Aim: How to Improve our Success within the Canadian Context

A Pan-Canadian Vision and Strategy for Health Services and Policy Research
 

The CIHR Institute of Health Services and Policy Research (IHSPR) believes that the challenges facing our health care system are best addressed through a common vision and collaborative approach. To facilitate this, over the coming months IHSPR will be working with its partners and the health services and policy community to develop a pan-Canadian Vision and Strategy for Health Services and Policy Research.
 
This vision and strategy will be informed by a number of key components, including a map of Canada’s existing assets and resources in health services and policy research; key informant interviews to identify perceived strengths, gaps, opportunities and priorities; and a survey of the health services and policy research community. IHSPR is pleased to be working with Dr. Terrance Sullivan and regional leads on these components of the project. This information will inform a Priorities Forum in 2014 involving partners and stakeholders to develop the Pan-Canadian Vision and Strategy for Health Services and Policy Research.
 
This is an exciting time for our community and we invite and encourage you to participate in this initiative. One Day Workshop: Expanding Evaluation Through the Use of Administrative Data

Canadian Society for Epidemiology and Biostatistics Conference (CSEB)

The 2013 CSEB Biennial Conference will bring together academics, graduate students, governmental officials, public health practitioners, and other epidemiology/biostatistics professionals to share and exchange findings from recent research, and to discuss important methodologies, emerging issues and initiatives.

The objectives of the 2013 CSEB Biennial Conference is to:

  • Inspire epidemiologists to take on new challenges;
  • Foster new collaborations and interactions; and;
  • Profile new tools and approaches.

The purpose of the 2013 CSEB Biennial Conference is to:

  • Strengthen, link, and network population and public health research and practice at individual, institutional, community, and government levels; and;
  • Strengthen scientific evidence applied to public health practice by highlighting and examining current and emerging issues common to epidemiology and biostatics at all levels of participation.

The theme of the 2013 CSEB Biennial Conference is “From Genes to Global Public Health: Advancing Methods Across The Spectrum” to reflect the diversity of disciplines and research that epidemiology and biostatistics encompasses. The conference will feature workshops on methods and topical issues, plenary speakers representative of the broad spectrum of epidemiological and biostatistical disciplines, concurrent sessions of oral presentations and poster presentations.

The 2013 CSEB Biennial Conference will be held from June 24th to June 27th, 2013 in St. John’s, Newfoundland. St. John’s is one of North America’s oldest cities and is steeped in a rich heritage and culture of the people who call Newfoundland home. Newfoundland has stunning coastlines where you can see whales, wild sea birds and icebergs. Numerous hiking trails provide picturesque views and access to Newfoundland’s rugged wilderness. Research and Project Coordinator – Prevention and Promotion
Mental Health Commission of Canada

ORGANIZATIONAL BACKGROUND

The Mental Health Commission of Canada (MHCC) is a non-profit organization created to focus national attention on mental health issues and to work to improve the health and social outcomes of people living with mental health problems and illnesses.

The Commission has a mandate to develop a Mental Health Strategy for Canada; to implement a ten-year Anti-Stigma/Anti Discrimination program; to develop a Knowledge Exchange Centre for the mental health field and to address homelessness in the context of mental health problems.  The Mental Health Commission’s head office is located in Calgary, Alberta, with a second office in Ottawa, Ontario.

POSITION OVERVIEW

Reporting to the Director of Prevention and Promotion Initiatives, the research and project coordinator will provide coordination, management and research support primarily to the prevention and promotion area, and will also work in collaboration with other MHCC departments. The MHCC has established five priority areas for the coming two years: (a) activating the Mental Health Strategy for Canada; (b) completing the MHCC’s ten-year anti-stigma/anti-discrimination effort; (c) addressing housing and homelessness; (d) improving workplace mental health; and (e) acting to prevent suicide.  Prevention and Promotion include workplace mental health, suicide prevention as well as other pieces of work relating to ementalhealth, peer support, and the development of core competencies for physicians and surgeons. 

The research and project coordinator must be able to analyze and synthesize large quantities of research touching on many dimensions of workplace mental health and related policy. In addition, in-depth familiarity with one or more specific dimensions of mental health research and policy could be an asset. The ability to function in both official languages is desired for this position.

DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Undertaking research on particular pieces of policies or topic areas
  • Writing memos, and reports
  • Develop and issue a Request for Proposals and build criteria to evaluate vendors
  • Consolidate and compile information
  • Review and summarize key reports and literature
  • Provide project management expertise and support for activities
  • Builds and enhances relationships with relevant stakeholders and partners
  • Assist with development of performance measurement indicators and assist with evaluation
  • Manages and analyzes data, and creates reporting mechanisms including reports and power point presentations of results.
  • Identify and review relevant literature and compiles written reports.
  • Gives presentations as required.
  • Collaborates on writing and publishing in academic journals when possible, to increase the volume of available research in the area of workplace mental health.   
  • Provides research functions such as review, analysis, and synthesis of relevant literature.
  • Assist MHCC decision makers in the dissemination of research information on the determinants of mental health such as demographic, social, economic, environmental and other data in support of mental health issues, policy development and service delivery.
  • Use project management and research methodology to provide support to a range of MHCC approved projects.

SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE

  • Two years experience in non-profit research, or related fields.
  • Experience in writing and editing logical and detailed reports.
  • Experience with computer information databases, personal computers in a "Windows" environment, computer logic concepts, and on-line systems.
  • Ability to communicate effectively, both verbally and written.
  • Must be highly organized, analytical, accurate and detail oriented.
  • Must be able to work under pressure to meet deadlines; must be able to analyze and prioritize assignments; also must judge the amount of time to spend for the expected outcome, according to the importance of a project and the type of information needed.
  • Must be able to work independently, as well as with a team.
  • Specific familiarity with strategic anti-stigma research and policy/practice issues pertinent to mental health in Canada and around the world.
  • Knowledge of project management and research methodology.
  • Superior interpersonal, organizational, research synthesis, methodological, project management and (oral and written) communications skills.
  • The ability to learn quickly and work independently.

QUALIFICATIONS 

  • Bachelor’s degree (MSc or PhD preferable) in a related discipline with demonstrated research and coordination skills including qualitative and quantitative research methods.
  • A minimum of two years of progressively responsible project management and research experience in a related field.
  • Project Management Professional (PMP) certification preferable.

The work of the Business Development and Marketing Officer will be focused on raising awareness and facilitating uptake of the National Standard of Canada for Psychological Health & Safety (hereafter: the Standard) to five key audiences: corporate Canada, small and medium businesses, organized labour, professional and trade associations, and HR professionals/business schools. Working closely with the government relations department, the Business Development and Marketing Officer will also work to target governments to raise awareness and drive uptake of the Standard.  The Business development and Marketing Officer will also work to improve opportunities and policies for people with lived experience to enter and stay in the work force, improve mental health literacy and provide practical support tools for dealing with a mental health crisis (e.g., such as with Mental Health First Aid).

The Business Development and Marketing Officer must understand how to translate and market a product to the key target groups. The Business Development and Marketing Officer should have a good understanding of how to work with all kinds of employers at all different levels and how to position and promote a complicated document.  Familiarity with Standards would be a benefit. In addition, in-depth familiarity with one or more specific dimensions of mental health research and policy could be an asset. The ability to function in both official languages is desired for this position.

DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

The Business Development and Marketing Officer will:

  • Provide strategic guidance regarding marketing, promotion and partnerships.
  • Create opportunities for adoption of the Standard by working with employers and employees to develop and promote leadership in the area of workplace mental health
  • Maintains a pulse on current events, public discourse and on stakeholder activities, interest and progress on issues relating to workplace mental health and the Standard.
  • Develop a process to track and monitor nationwide progress in the uptake of activity to improve psychological health and safety in Canadian workplaces.
  • Work with the MHCC’s Knowledge Exchange Centre to develop and maintain Communities of Practice aimed at sharing leading practices and experiences to improve psychological health and safety in the workplace.
  • Work with the MHCC Web Team to develop a web presence that engages organizations and drives them to use the Standard.
  • Create opportunities to profile leaders in the area of workplace mental health in order to encourage and catalyze policy change among like-minded organizations.  
  • Work proactively in collaboration with relevant MHCC departments (Communications, Government Relations) to ensure a coordinated and strategic approach to the communication and marketing of the Standard to all audiences.
  • Identify and foster partnerships, through proactive outreach and lead generation, in the five key audiences: corporate Canada, small and medium businesses, organized labour, professional and trade associations, and HR professionals/business schools.  Help manage
  • Develop strategic plans for each target audience and determine how best to approach these partnerships.
  • Assist with the maintenance of the MHCC’s corporate relationships with relevant stakeholders, policy makers, researchers, and community partners in the area of workplace mental health.
  • Assist with the development of, and ongoing updating of an internal strategy that guides and links all MHCC work in the area of workplace
  • Assist with the management of relevant aspects of a multi-year, case study research project – which will identify 7-8 organizations to implement the Standard, developing research methodology, developing performance measures, collecting qualitative and quantitative data over 36 months and then disseminating the findings and profiling the organizations in various ways (mainly they would help develop RFP, recruit case study organizations, work with the research team, analyse the findings, and determine the best ways to share the findings).
  • Develop briefing notes and undertake research in the area of workplace mental health.
  • Promote collegial relationships among MHCC team members.
  • Other duties as required.

SKILLS AND ATTRIBUTES 

  • High degree of analytic ability and superior capacity to address complex issues.
  • Ability to translate and communicate a complicated health and social policy issues into a language that is appropriate for various external audiences.
  • Background in marketing, communications, knowledge translation and stakeholder relations is an asset.
  • Ability to develop a marketing and promotion plan to raise awareness of the importance for organizations to focus on psychological health and safety in the workplace.   
  • An established network with the corporate and business community, as well as an understanding of organized labour and unions.
  • Strong project management skills and a demonstrated experience meeting deadlines while working independently.
  • Demonstrated skill in building collaborative and integrative working relationships and in working with people with diverse backgrounds and perspectives.
  • Results oriented, creative, and possessing a high degree of initiative as well as the ability to work autonomously.
  • Superior interpersonal, oral and written communication skills, including comfort with public speaking.
  • Ability to learn quickly and independently and to function in a rapidly changing environment.
  • Demonstrated understanding of the life experiences of families and individuals living with mental health problems and illnesses.
  • Commitment to the vision of a reformed, person-centred mental health system and experience working with people with first-hand experience of mental health problems/illnesses.

EXPERIENCE AND EDUCATION

  • Bachelor’s degree in business administration or commerce, combined with a marketing speciality or related degree; or commensurate experience.
  • Experience working in a non-profit is an asset.
  • 3-5 years’ experience in a product marketing role.
  • Ability to conduct qualitative market research and demonstrate success defining and launching products in the marketplace.
  • Specific familiarity with research and policy/practice issues pertinent to mental health in Canada, or equivalent.
  • Two to three years of progressively responsible research and/or policy development experience in mental health or a related field.
  • Project management experience.
  • Demonstrable successes working in fast-paced, result-oriented environments, in interdisciplinary and collaborative teams, and in partnerships with groups that include policy makers, researchers, clinicians and people with lived experience.
  •  Knowledge of and ability to use a variety of computer programs.
  • Understanding of and experience with workplace mental health.
  • Good understanding of the National Standard on Psychological Health and Safety in the Workplace.
