New CPD Accreditation National Standard

March 08, 2016

We are excited to share the good news that the National Standard for Support of Accredited CPD Activities has been approved by the Collège des médecins du Québec (CMQ), the College of Family Physicians of Canada (CFPC) and the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada (Royal College).

Today, we are launching the 22-month implementation period leading to official adoption of the National Standard on January 1, 2018.

During this implementation period, we encourage you to familiarize yourself with the National Standard and prepare implementation plans to align your organization’s operating procedures by January 1, 2018.

You can access the National Standard here.

A single standard for support

For the first time in Canada, the National Standard establishes a unified set of ethical standards and expectations that a continuing professional development (CPD) activity must meet in order to be accredited for inclusion within the Royal College’s Maintenance of Certification (MOC) Program and the CFPC’s MAINPRO® program.

The National Standard will guide the ability of CPD providers and other stakeholders to

  • safeguard high-quality CPD from commercial influence
  • outline a clearly defined role for sponsors of CPD activities
  • standardize development and delivery of CPD activities for both family and specialist physician audiences

How we’ll support you over the next 22 months

As a first step, we encourage you to

  • familiarize yourself with the elements of the National Standard
  • compare these elements to your organization’s standard operating procedures
  • see what needs to change to facilitate alignment by 2018

More resources coming soon

  • High-level educational tactics, such as an online self-study module and implementation roadmap will help you apply the standards to your own organization’s unique needs
  • Summaries and FAQs will help you understand the changes and communicate them to others

You play a very important role in physician learning and professional development

In developing and delivering accredited CPD activities in accordance with the National Standard, you will play a critical role in supporting the continuing professional development of Canadian physicians.

We value your support and are committed to collaborating with you to continuously enhance the quality and integrity of CPD accreditation throughout Canada.

Yours sincerely,
